Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa engaged in a heated exchange in Parliament today over matters related to education.
The debate was sparked by allegations regarding schools collecting funds from parents to purchase smart boards and the closure of the postgraduate faculty at Wickramarachchi University.
Opposition Leader Premadasa claimed that some schools, both in Colombo and other regions, had sought financial contributions from parents for smart boards. He also questioned the decision to close the university’s postgraduate faculty.
Responding, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said the government has already distributed 1,500 smart boards to schools. She added that the closure of the Wickramarachchi University postgraduate faculty was due to issues arising from an improper setup.
