Passenger arrested at airport with ‘Kush’-type drugs worth Rs. 10 million

A passenger attempting to smuggle a consignment of narcotics valued at approximately Rs. 10 million through Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, was arrested by officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau in the early hours today.

The suspect is a 34-year-old businessman residing in Colombo 12.

He had arrived at Katunayake Airport from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on board SriLankan Airlines flight UL-319 at around 12.50 a.m. on February 5.

During a search of his luggage, officers uncovered 1.010 kilograms of a narcotic substance similar to “Kush,” which had been carefully packed and concealed in several packets.

Authorities have taken steps to forward the seized drugs to the Colombo Dangerous Drugs Board for further analysis and investigation.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on February 5 and is to be detained and questioned further in connection with the incident.
