The Department of Meteorology warns that showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district over the next 24 hours.

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in the Uva Province and in the Batticaloa, Ampara, Hambantota and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop in several other areas after 2.00 p.m., with rainfall above 50 mm expected at certain places.

Fairly strong winds ranging between 30–40 kmph can be anticipated at times in the Northern and North-Western provinces, and in the Matale, Trincomalee and Anuradhapura districts.

Misty conditions are expected during the early morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in Galle, Matara and Badulla districts.

The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage caused by localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.

Sea Areas Around the Island

According to the marine forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 05 February 2026, showers will occur at several places in sea areas off the coast from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Showers or thundershowers may also occur in other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Winds will be north-easterly, with speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 45–50 kmph at times in sea areas from Colombo to Mullaitivu via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Sea conditions in these areas are expected to be fairly rough, while other sea areas around the island will remain moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.

Fishermen and naval communities are urged to remain vigilant and heed advisory notices.
