In his message to President Dissanayake, President Muizzu noted that the celebrations come at a time when Sri Lanka continues to demonstrate resilience in its efforts toward economic stability, social harmony and national progress. He highlighted the close and long-standing friendship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, strengthened through decades of cooperation and shared regional priorities.
In a separate message to Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya, President Muizzu acknowledged the strong history of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, expressing confidence that bilateral relations will continue to grow, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as trade, development and regional stability.
President Muizzu also conveyed his personal best wishes for the good health and wellbeing of both leaders, as well as continued peace, progress and prosperity for the people of Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, in a message posted on his official X account, the Maldivian President highlighted the centuries-old ties between the two nations, describing Sri Lanka as one of the Maldives’ closest and most trusted friends, and wished the country enduring unity and strength.
Sri Lanka marks its Independence Day annually on 4 February, commemorating independence from British colonial rule in 1948.
