DUBAI – The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday expressed concern after Pakistan declined to play against India in the group stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, prompting the global governing body to explore diplomatic channels to resolve the issue.

The Indian media reported that the ICC has decided to initiate back-channel discussions with Pakistan and has assigned ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khawaja to lead the engagement.

Khawaja, who represents the Singapore Cricket Association, is expected to hold talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in an effort to persuade it to reconsider its stance and agree to participate in the high-profile match against India. Indian media described his role as that of a “peacemaker” amid the developing situation.

The development follows an announcement by the Government of Pakistan on Sunday, February 15, stating that the national team would not play its scheduled T20 World Cup match against India.

Indian media further reported that the PCB has yet to formally convey its decision to the ICC through official channels.
