Sentence reductions and fine-related relief will be extended to 49 inmates under a special Presidential Pardon to be enforced on February 4, 2026, in line with the 78th National Independence Day, the Presidential Secretariat announced.
The clemency, granted by His Excellency the President under Article 34 of the Constitution, focuses on easing the remaining prison terms of selected inmates through sentence adjustments rather than full releases.
According to the Secretariat, prisoners eligible under the scheme will receive a one-week sentence reduction for each year already served, while those imprisoned solely due to the non-payment of fines below Rs. 75,000 will have the balance of their sentences waived.
The decision is part of the annual Independence Day pardon programme, aimed at recognising the national importance of the occasion while extending humanitarian relief to qualifying prisoners.
