Chinthaka Hewapathirana of the National People’s Power (NPP) was elected as the new Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha today (02).
He secured the position after a tightly contested vote, receiving 22 votes in favor and 21 against, giving the NPP control of the Sabha by a narrow one-vote majority.
The chairmanship had remained vacant since the assassination of former Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara, who was shot dead inside his office on October 22.
