The construction of the Torrington Mawatha Housing Complex in Colombo 07 was officially commenced yesterday under the patronage of Minister of Transport and Urban Development and Leader of the House, Mr. Bimal Ratthayake.
The 11-storey housing complex, being built on a 91-acre site at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,619.18 million, is expected to be completed within two years. The project, which was first initiated in 2014 but abandoned three times, has now been resumed under the Urban Development Authority’s Urban Revitalization Housing Project.
Upon completion, the complex will provide 115 homes for low-income families in the area, including residents of the 189 Estate, Torrington. A large gathering of officials, including Colombo District National People’s Power MP Lakmali Hemachandra, Colombo Mayor Vrai Kelley Balthasar, Urban Development Authority Chairman Engineer M.G. Hemachandra, and local residents attended the ceremony.
Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara, speaking at the event, said the government aims to implement development projects that directly benefit the public and improve living conditions, particularly for low-income communities.
