The Sri Lankan arts community is mourning the loss of Bandula Harischandra, a pioneering figure in the local comic book and visual arts industry, who passed away this morning (01) following a sudden illness. He was 85 years old.

A Legacy of Visual Storytelling
Educated at Sri Jinadharmadana Vidyalaya, Panadura, Harischandra began his illustrious career in 1962 by joining Lake House. He debuted his first comic story in the Dinamina newspaper, later becoming a household name through his contributions to SiluminaNavayugaya, and the iconic Sathuta comic weekly.
He is widely credited with introducing color to the Sri Lankan comic art tradition, blending modern storytelling with classical influences. His work was deeply inspired by the Jataka story murals found in ancient cave temples, a style he successfully adapted for a contemporary audience.

Throughout his career, he authored and illustrated several legendary comic series that defined the "Golden Age" of Sri Lankan comics, including:
• Kasapahara
• Pandukabhaya
• Nala Damayanthi
• Nayana
• Pethigomara
• Hathweni Dawasa
• Devathapaya
Transition to Temple Art
In his later years, Harischandra transitioned from the printing press to the temple walls, dedicating himself to Buddhist mural art. His masterful brushwork can be seen today at the Borella Sri Lankaramaya and the Kaluwadumulla Temple in Ambalangoda, where he helped preserve the traditional temple painting style for future generations.

The remains of the late Bandula Harischandra are lying in state for public respect. The final rites are scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon (February 02) at the Bandaragama Public Cemetery.
