The Riverston Tourist Zone in the Knuckles Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was reopened to both local and international visitors today (01) following repairs to infrastructure damaged by Cyclone Ditwah.

Access roads to Riverston from Rattota and Laggala, which were severely affected by the cyclone, have been fully reconstructed within a period of two months. Authorities have stated that, for the time being, only light vehicles are permitted to enter the area to ensure safety.

Public transport services to Riverston have also resumed, allowing tourists to once again explore the region’s renowned natural beauty. Visitors have been advised to travel responsibly, adhere to local regulations, and take all necessary measures to protect the sensitive environment of the World Heritage site.

The successful restoration work was achieved through the collective efforts of the Road Development Authority, the tri-forces, district and divisional secretariats, local government authorities, and several volunteer organizations.

Officials commended the swift coordination among all stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of sustainable tourism and environmental conservation as visitor activities resume in the reserve.
