A new Gazette notification allows women aged 18 and above to work night shifts in the hospitality and food service industries, under strict safety and welfare measures.

Issued on January 30, the amendment to the Shop and Office Employees (Regulation of Employment and Remuneration) Act permits employment between 6.00 p.m. and 6.00 a.m. Employers are required to ensure safe working conditions, provide accommodation or transport, and take all necessary steps to protect female employees during night hours.

The regulations were issued under Section 66 of the Act by Labour Minister Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando.
