The cultural pageant, a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s religious calendar, is being held under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple, Most Venerable Dr. Kirinde Assaji Nayaka Thero, and organized by the temple’s Dayaka Sabha.
The procession is renowned for showcasing the island's rich cultural diversity and national identity. This year's event features: A vibrant array of Kandyan, Low Country, and Sabaragamuwa dance troupes. A significant number of caparisoned tuskers and elephants, a highlight that continues to draw massive crowds. Drummers, flautists, and conch shell blowers providing a rhythmic backdrop to the spiritual ceremony.
The Navam Perahera has evolved into a major tourist attraction, drawing thousands of local devotees and foreign visitors to the heart of the city to witness the fusion of spirituality and traditional art.
From 6:30 p.m. until the conclusion of the Perahera. Major roads including Sir James Peiris Mawatha, Navam Mawatha, Staple Street, and areas surrounding the Beira Lake. Motorists are strongly urged to use alternative routes and cooperate with officers on duty to avoid significant delays.
