Wax museum was ceremonially opened on January 29, 2026, at the Arcade premises of Independence Square, Colombo, marking a new milestone for the country’s tourism and cultural landscape.
The Colombo Wax Museum, designed to international standards comparable to renowned wax museums around the world, showcases lifelike wax figures of prominent personalities from cinema, music, sports and other fields, representing both Sri Lanka and the global stage. It is the first attraction of its kind to be established in the country as a human-made tourism experience.
The opening ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including artists Athula Herath and Mahima Herath, Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa Pradeep Nilanga Dela, and veteran cultural figures Ravindra Randeniya, Mahendra Perera, Rohana Weerasinghe, Sriyantha Mendis and Kusum Renu. Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva was also among those present, adding prestige to the event.
Speaking at the occasion, it was noted that the establishment of the wax museum goes beyond being a cultural landmark, serving as a strategic step towards strengthening Colombo’s position as a vibrant tourism hub. Such unique attractions are expected to encourage visitors to spend more time in the city, explore its heritage and contribute to the local economy.
The organisers further announced that the concept has already been expanded beyond Colombo, with two additional branches set up in Polonnaruwa and Kandy. This initiative is expected to foster national pride while attracting international tourists and adding new dimensions to Sri Lanka’s growing tourism sector.
