During their visit, the delegation toured several affected regions and met with officials from key state institutions, including the Disaster Management Centre. The US Embassy said the visit reflects the United States’ partnership-based approach to humanitarian assistance.
Drawing on extensive experience in responding to natural disasters in the United States, the Montana National Guard is expected to support Sri Lanka’s recovery planning efforts. The embassy noted that the team’s expertise, developed through responses to wildfires, floods and severe winter storms in Montana, would be valuable to local disaster management authorities.
As part of the assessment, the delegation visited Colombo, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Matale and Puttalam to help inform US decision-making on humanitarian assistance.
The ongoing cooperation is based on an agreement signed in November between Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence and the Montana National Guard, the US Embassy said, underscoring continued collaboration in disaster preparedness and response.
