The Kataragama Divisional Secretary, Prageeth Kulathilaka, has lodged a complaint with the Kataragama Police over an alleged financial fraud involving the disbursement of Aswesuma Fund.

According to the complaint, an officer attached to the Kataragama Divisional Secretariat is suspected of committing a financial fraud related to the release of Aswesuma Fund.

Divisional Secretary Kulathilaka said that a Kataragama resident identified as W.A. Nimal had contacted him by telephone, claiming that the Aswesuma Fund due to him was being misused by an officer of the Divisional Secretariat.

Following preliminary inquiries, it was revealed that the full amount owed to W.A. Nimal, including arrears dating back to 2023, had been credited to a bank account in his name at the Alawwa branch of a private bank. The account had reportedly been opened using the National Identity Card number of W.A. Nimal.

Kulathilaka further said that he contacted the relevant bank branch and requested the temporary suspension of the account. He noted that indications of financial irregularities had been observed and that a formal internal investigation would be conducted.

The Divisional Secretary has also requested the Kataragama Police to carry out a separate investigation into the matter.
