The Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, will launch the Inter-University Genome Sequencing Laboratory Network on Friday (30) at the Mini Auditorium of the UCFM Tower, marking a major step in strengthening Sri Lanka’s national genomic and laboratory capacity.
The initiative aims to enhance collaboration among universities, the health sector and international partners in genome sequencing and related research.
The launch ceremony will be attended by World Health Organization Representative Dr. Rajesh Pandey as Guest of Honour and Secretary to the Ministry of Health Dr. Anil Jasinghe as Chief Guest. Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo Prof. Indika Karunathilake will also address the event.
A technical overview of genome sequencing services in Sri Lanka will be presented by Dr. Suranga Dolamulla, Director (Laboratory Services) at the Ministry of Health, focusing on current capacities and future directions.
The programme will conclude with scientific sessions and discussions involving representatives from academia, the Ministry of Health and international agencies.
The initiative is led by Vidya Jyothi Prof. Vajira H. W. Dissanayake, Chairperson of the Network and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, and is expected to strengthen research, diagnostics and public health surveillance through improved coordination and shared expertise.
