The trip was taken to attend a degree-conferring ceremony for his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, at a British university.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) received instructions from the Attorney General to take Ekanayake into custody. A police team went to his residence yesterday (27) to carry out the arrest, but he was not at home. Authorities have also visited several other locations linked to him, but no information on his whereabouts has been obtained so far.
The police stated that they expect to present Ekanayake before the court or have him appear before the CID very soon.
Meanwhile, the case against former President Wickremesinghe is scheduled to be taken up again today (28) at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. He is accused of misusing public funds totaling LKR 16 million for a personal foreign trip.
