The Inspector General of Police (IGP) and four other senior police officials have been summoned to appear before the Ratnapura office of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka on February 03, in connection with a human rights petition filed against them.

Those summoned include the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for Ratnapura, the Superintendent of Police of Embilipitiya, the Assistant Superintendent of Police of Embilipitiya, and the Officer-in-Charge of Embilipitiya Police.

The petitioner, Police Constable Hettiarachchige Susantha Weerasinghe of the Suriyakanda Police, is currently under interdiction. In his petition, he has alleged that the respondent officials violated his fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

Weerasinghe was interdicted in connection with an alleged assault involving Ratnapura District Parliamentarian Shantha Padmakumara. The Human Rights Commission is expected to inquire into the matter.
