A well-known supermarket located along Passara Road, Badulla, has been fined Rs. 100,000 by court for selling goods above the maximum retail price.
Officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) carried out a raid on the supermarket on January 19, 2026, following information that goods were being sold at inflated prices. The inspection was conducted at the outlet situated near Kosgas Junction, Badulla.
During the raid, it was revealed that one kilogram of imported rice belonging to the GR 11 category, which carries a maximum retail price of Rs. 240.00, was being sold for Rs. 270.00, in violation of pricing regulations.
Subsequently, the Consumer Affairs Authority filed a case against the relevant business at the Badulla Magistrate’s Court on January 26, 2026. The businessman pleaded guilty to the charge, after which the court imposed a fine of Rs. 100,000.
The Consumer Affairs Authority stated that regular inspections will continue island-wide to prevent unfair trade practices and to protect consumers from overpricing.
