The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) said that 84 individuals were arrested last year for accepting bribes.
According to the Commission, the arrests were carried out during 130 raids conducted across the island between January 1 and December 31, 2025. The majority of the arrests — 30 individuals — were made by the Sri Lanka Police.
Among the arrested police officers were 13 police sergeants, nine police constables, four sub-inspectors and two chief inspectors of police.
In addition, 11 individuals attached to institutions under the Ministry of Justice, five officers from the Departments of Agriculture and Public Services, three Grama Niladharis and three officers attached to Pradeshiya Sabhas were also arrested in connection with bribery incidents during the year.
CIABOC further said that, apart from the arrests made during raids in 2025, a total of 56 individuals were arrested in relation to investigations conducted by the Commission.
Those arrested include former ministers, ministry secretaries, department heads, doctors, former chairmen of Pradeshiya Sabhas and several other public officials.
Meanwhile, the Commission said that during 2025 it filed 115 cases against 153 individuals and concluded 69 cases. During the same period, CIABOC received 8,409 complaints, of which investigations were initiated into 569 complaints.
Speaking at a recent awareness programme for public officials, Director General of CIABOC, Ranga Dissanayake, stated that everyone has a responsibility to eradicate bribery and corruption from the public service.
