Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) W.P.J. Senadhira says that 155 people have lost their lives in 147 road accidents reported across Sri Lanka during the past 25 days, highlighting a sharp rise in fatal traffic incidents.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, DIG Senadhira further revealed that 35 people were killed in 34 road accidents within the last week alone, describing the situation as deeply concerning.

He stressed that negligence, reckless driving, speeding, and disregard for traffic laws remain key contributors to these accidents. DIG Senadhira emphasized the urgent need for greater public awareness on road safety, along with stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, to prevent further loss of life.

Police have urged motorists and pedestrians alike to act responsibly on the roads, noting that collective effort is essential to reduce the growing number of fatalities.
