A minority group of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has launched an indefinite trade union action starting from 8.00 a.m. today (January 26), citing several demands related to professional privileges.

According to the group, the action was initiated based on a number of longstanding issues faced by medical officers. However, another group of doctors, including specialist physicians, stated that the government has already begun addressing many of these problems over an extended period, questioning the need for the current action.

Despite the launch of the trade union action, hospital services across most parts of the country were observed to be functioning as usual. Authorities noted that only limited disruptions were reported, although some patients visiting certain hospitals experienced inconvenience due to the action.

The same group had previously carried out a 48-hour strike based on similar demands. Less than 24 hours after the conclusion of that strike, they commenced this indefinite trade union action today.

The action is being carried out under the following five measures:

Refraining from issuing prescriptions for patients to purchase medicines from private pharmacies when such medicines are unavailable in clinics and outpatient departments.

Refraining from issuing referrals or recommendations for laboratory tests to be conducted at private laboratories or private hospitals when such tests are unavailable within the government hospital system.

Opposing the establishment of new hospital units if the approved number of doctors cannot be provided or if an approved cadre has not been allocated.

Withholding support for certain clinics and health camps conducted based on political interests or requirements.

Withdrawing from duties at hospitals, clinics, or outpatient departments if a supporting staff member is not provided to assist the doctor during patient examinations.

However, despite the trade union action initiated by a section of the GMOA from 8.00 a.m. today, it was observed that operations in the majority of government hospitals continued without significant disruption.
