A three-wheeler driver has been arrested by Wanathavilluwa Police for sexually harassing a young tourist from Sweden during her visit to the region.
The foreign national had arrived in Sri Lanka from Sweden and traveled by public bus from Katunayake to Puttalam on January 23 to visit Wilpattu National Park. She then hired a three-wheeler to travel from Puttalam to Eluwankulam via Old Mannar.
According to initial investigations, the driver sexually harassed her multiple times during the journey and on one occasion attempted to train her to drive the vehicle.
The woman reported the incidents to the manager of the hotel where she was staying in Eluwankulam, who accompanied her to Wanathavilluwa Police Station to file a complaint. The 26-year-old married driver, a resident of Puttalam, was subsequently located and arrested.
Police records indicate that the suspect has allegedly targeted foreign women in the past. He was later released on bail after being produced before the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court on January 24.
