The National Council for Road Safety has announced that fines are now being imposed for violations of the seat belt law.

Council Chairman Manjula Kularatne said the three-month grace period ended on December 24. Accordingly, all drivers and passengers travelling on expressways are required to wear seat belts, while drivers and front-seat passengers on all other roads must also comply with the regulation.

He added that police have been instructed to strictly enforce the law nationwide.
