Sri Lanka’s top-ranked Under-11 table tennis player in the world, Tavi Samarawira, returned to the country in the early hours of today (26) after securing two gold medals at two World Junior Table Tennis Ranking Tournaments held in Bahrain and Qatar.

Tavi clinched the gold medal and first place in the Under-11 category at the World Junior Table Tennis Ranking Tournament in Bahrain, which was held from January 14 to 18. He went on to continue his outstanding performance by winning another gold medal in the Under-11 category at the World Junior Table Tennis Tournament in Doha, Qatar, held from January 19 to 25.

Currently just 10 years old, Tavi Samarawira is a Grade 6 student at St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Colombo. He is coached by his father, Hasitha Samarawira, who plays a key role in his training and development.

Tavi and his coach arrived in Sri Lanka at 3.55 a.m. today (26) via SalamAir flight OV-437, travelling from Muscat, Oman, and landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.

Upon arrival, they were accorded a warm and respectful welcome by airport officials. A group of family members, including Tavi’s mother and brother, as well as former Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association President Daya Samarawira, and other close relatives, were also present at the airport to celebrate his remarkable achievements.
