Three Sri Lankan nationals attempting to smuggle a large consignment of Kush and Hashish into the country were arrested by Sri Lanka Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, early this morning (25).
The suspects were taken into custody by airport customs officials together with officers from the Customs Narcotics Control Division after arriving from Muscat, Oman, on Salam Air flight OV-437 at around 4.00 a.m.
During inspections, officers recovered 10 kilograms and 394 grams of Kush packed into 10 parcels and 1 kilogram and 912 grams of Hashish contained in 18 parcels. The narcotics were concealed in five pieces of luggage carried by the suspects.
Customs officials estimate the total street value of the seized drugs to be approximately Rs. 130 million.
Among those arrested are a 29-year-old businessman and a bricklayer from the Nattandiya area, as well as a 32-year-old businessman residing in the Grandpass area.
The seized narcotics and the three suspects have been handed over to the Katunayake Airport Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations and legal action.
