According to police information, the operation was launched based on intelligence received regarding a drug trafficking operation at sea. During the raid, a fishing vessel suspected of transporting narcotics was intercepted, leading to the arrest of five suspects. Subsequent inspections revealed that around 200 kilograms of narcotics were being transported aboard the vessel.
Further operations in the same sea area resulted in the interception of another fishing vessel, with six more suspects taken into custody. The Navy stated that approximately 70 kilograms of narcotics were found on board this vessel.
The total haul is suspected to belong to a member of an organized criminal gang known as “Dehibale”, according to preliminary investigations.
Both fishing vessels along with the 11 suspects were brought to the Dikkowita Harbour by the Navy by this morning (25). Further investigations are currently underway, and legal action is to be taken after completing the necessary inquiries into the seized narcotics.
