Speaking at a media briefing on Friday (23), GMOA Media Spokesman Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe stated that Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa had provided several written agreements aimed at addressing a range of issues faced by hospitals, particularly those affecting medical officers, following a series of discussions.
Dr. Wijesinghe emphasised that the GMOA was not demanding immediate solutions, but rather a structured approach to resolving the issues. “We have not asked for these problems to be solved overnight. What we have requested is a discussion with the Ministry of Finance and a step-by-step plan to move forward,” he said.
However, he alleged that the Minister was failing to implement the agreed measures, effectively violating the written agreements. According to Dr. Wijesinghe, this demonstrated a lack of commitment by the Government to safeguarding the health sector, protecting public lives, and strengthening the medical profession.
He further stressed that the objective of the strike was not to inconvenience patients, but to defend the healthcare system and the rights of medical officers. “The success of this strike is not measured by patient inconvenience, but by its role in protecting the health system and its doctors,” he added.
