Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya said that the country’s general laws apply to disputes involving ride-hailing services such as PickMe and Uber and traditional three-wheeler operators.

His remarks come in the wake of protests and clashes reported in several areas following a dispute between a PickMe-registered driver and three-wheeler drivers in Ella in December 2025, which resulted in incidents of public disorder.

In response, the IGP has summoned representatives of three-wheeler owners’ associations and officials from ride-hailing companies, including PickMe and Uber, for discussions at Police Headquarters.

The police chief emphasized that the primary responsibility of the Sri Lanka Police is to maintain public order, warning that criminal acts such as violence, threats, or intimidation will be dealt with strictly under the law, regardless of institutional or union-related disputes.
