Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Ratnayake stated that urban development in Colombo should ensure a high quality of life not only for the upper classes but also for the general public, stressing that development must not create social inequalities.
The Minister made these remarks on Thursday (January 23) while attending the resumption of construction of a long-stalled housing project for low-income families on Colombage Mawatha, Nawala.
“Life in Colombo should be beautiful for everyone. Development projects should be implemented in a way that allows all people to enjoy equal benefits, without causing social crises or widening inequalities. The true meaning of urban development goes beyond constructing buildings; it is about achieving social development,” the Minister said.
The housing project, which commenced in 2014, was halted due to the financial crisis and other constraints. Construction recommenced yesterday with the intervention of the Urban Development Authority (UDA). The project consists of 615 housing units and is estimated to cost Rs. 7,287 million. The total land extent of the housing complex is two acres, one rood and 36 perches.
Minister Ratnayake noted that although the project was initially scheduled for completion in 2016, delays have pushed the expected completion to 2028. He assured that the Ministry is providing maximum support to ensure the project is completed urgently, in line with required standards and with priority given to the needs of the residents.
“These must truly be homes. The project should be completed in a manner that creates a happy living environment and provides value and benefits beyond the original plan for the people who will live here,” he added.
