Operations at the third dock of the Eastern Terminal at the Port of Colombo commenced today (23), marking another milestone in the port’s expansion.

Symbolizing the start of operations, three vessels belonging to three of the world’s leading shipping companies arrived at the newly opened dock.

The dock is equipped with 12 gantry cranes and 40 automated yard cranes, a development expected to further strengthen the Port of Colombo’s position as a major regional shipping hub.

Construction of the Eastern Terminal began on 12 January 2022 on a 75-hectare site, with a total planned terminal length of 1,320 meters. To date, 1,090 meters of construction has been completed, accounting for approximately 82 percent of the total work.

Once operational, the Eastern Terminal is expected to handle more than 500,000 containers by 2025. Upon full completion, its handling capacity is projected to increase to 1.5 million containers.

The project is being developed under the supervision and investment of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, with the objective of increasing the overall operational capacity of the Port of Colombo.
