Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena said that 10 out of 56 bus drivers tested during a recent inspection have been found to have used drugs.
He said initial urine sample tests confirmed the use of narcotics including ice, heroin and cannabis by the identified drivers.
As part of a programme aimed at ensuring safe driving and strengthening public transport safety, a mobile laboratory testing operation was launched yesterday (21) at Bastion Mawatha in Colombo. The urine samples obtained during the operation were confirmed on-site and will be forwarded for further legal action, the Deputy Minister said.
Dr. Gunasena noted that detecting drug use in 10 out of 56 drivers represents a significant and concerning percentage, highlighting the seriousness of the issue. He stressed that continued public support and cooperation from bus owners are essential for the success of the programme.
He further stated that passengers have the right to inform authorities if they suspect a driver is under the influence of drugs while driving, in the interest of public safety. Bus owners were also urged to remain vigilant about their employees and take responsibility for ensuring drug- and alcohol-free driving.
The Deputy Minister added that during the operation, it was observed that some drivers attempted to evade testing through various communication methods, underscoring the need for greater vigilance by both the public and bus owners to ensure the effectiveness of this national initiative.
