Health authorities say public support is vital to strengthen leprosy control efforts in Sri Lanka, including early detection and timely treatment.
According to the Anti-Leprosy Campaign, the highest number of leprosy patients has been reported from the Colombo District. Gampaha and Kurunegala have also been identified as districts where a comparatively high number of patients have been detected.
Acting Director of the Anti-Leprosy Campaign, Dr. Yasoma Weerasekara, said Sri Lanka is working towards a national target of reducing leprosy cases to zero by 2035.
Officials encourage the public to support awareness programmes and seek medical advice early if symptoms are suspected, stressing that early treatment helps prevent complications and limits spread.
