Declaring that he is not above the law, Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe said any allegations against him should be challenged before the courts, stressing, “If I make a mistake, there are courts to challenge me. If the court instructs me to do something, I will comply.”

He made these remarks when he met members of the Free Lawyers organization at the Attorney General’s Department amid reports of pressure being exerted on him to resign.

During the meeting, the Free Lawyers organization handed over a letter expressing its support for the Attorney General. The letter alleged that false, defamatory and hostile content targeting the Attorney General and his Department is being circulated in an organized manner on social media with the aim of undermining public confidence.

The organization claimed that certain overseas journalists, along with local YouTubers and social media activists, are contributing to these campaigns, which it said appear intended to destabilize the Attorney General’s Department for political or personal interests.

Warning that such actions threaten the independence and impartiality of the Department, the Free Lawyers organization also noted that similar pressure tactics have previously been directed at judges and members of the judicial service.

Reaffirming its confidence in the Attorney General’s Department, the organization said it has consistently acted independently and in line with the law, guided by evidence and legal procedure rather than public pressure, and pledged its full support to enable the Attorney General to carry out his duties without interference.
