Air quality in parts of Sri Lanka has worsened over the past 24 hours, reaching slightly unhealthy levels in several districts, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) reported.
While moderate air quality was recorded in areas including Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Embilipitiya, Trincomalee, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa, Kalutara, and Hambantota, slightly unhealthy conditions were observed in Kandy, Kegalle, Galle, Puttalam, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, and Moneragala.
Forecasts indicate that Air Quality Index (AQI) values are likely to range between 56 and 120 over the next 24 hours, with peak pollution expected during morning and evening rush hours, between 8:00–9:00 a.m. and 4:00–5:00 p.m.
The NBRO has advised the public to wear face masks when outdoors and urged vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, to seek immediate medical attention if they experience breathing difficulties. Authorities also encouraged people to limit outdoor activities during peak pollution hours to reduce exposure.
