Vehicle owners in the Rendapola settlement have appealed to authorities for assistance in recovering vehicles buried under mud following a landslide triggered by Cyclone Ditwah.
Resident Yoganathan Ananda Murthy said the landslide, which struck on the night of November 27 last year, claimed eight lives and destroyed several homes. Vehicles including a van, a lorry, a three-wheeler, and a motorcycle parked along the road were also buried in the debris.
Murthy noted that while a three-wheeler and a motorcycle were later recovered, both were badly damaged and no longer usable. Attempts to retrieve his van and another lorry have so far failed, despite repeated requests for government assistance.
He said he has spent a significant amount of money on recovery efforts without success and may now be forced to dismantle or sell the vehicles as scrap. Murthy urged authorities to step in and support affected vehicle owners in the area.
