Sri Lanka is being recognised once again as a top beach destination for 2026. Travel guide Lonely Planet has listed the island’s beaches as perfect for sun, swimming, surfing, and relaxing. Sri Lanka has over 1,340 km of sandy coastline offering many experiences for visitors.
From busy beaches in the south to quiet coves in the north and east, Sri Lanka has something for everyone. The best time to visit the southwest coast is November to April, while the east coast is ideal from May to September.
Some of the top beaches include:
Unawatuna Beach – Considered the best overall, it has calm waters, good facilities, and is popular with swimmers and partygoers.
Dalawella Beach – Famous for Frog Rock, a family-friendly lagoon, and the chance to see turtles.
Weligama Beach – Great for beginner surfers, with gentle waves and sandy shores.
Mirissa Beach – Known for its crescent-shaped bay, restaurants, and whale-watching tours.
Hiriketiya Beach – A quiet bay with a scenic headland, suitable for swimming and relaxing.
Other beaches worth visiting are Kalkudah in the east, for peaceful sands and coconut trees, and Casuarina in the north, known for its natural beauty. Surf lovers can enjoy Arugam Bay, famous worldwide for surfing spots like Whiskey Point and Crocodile Rock.
Other attractions include Kalpitiya for kitesurfing, Bentota for family-friendly beaches, and Mawella for calm, relaxing surroundings.
