The long-delayed Phase III of the Baseline Road Extension Project is set to resume, paving the way for major improvements in traffic flow along the busy Colombo-Horana corridor.
The project, which involves the construction of a six-lane road from Kirulapona Junction to Dutugemunu Street, is expected to significantly reduce travel time and congestion once completed. Authorities say the development will enhance urban mobility and contribute to greater economic productivity in the region.
The initiative was originally approved by the Cabinet on November 11, 2009. However, construction was suspended in 2022 due to the economic crisis, following recommendations by the Officers’ Committee for Re-Strategizing and Accelerating Large-Scale Development Projects.
Despite the delay, the project remains a priority under the National Road Master Plan. Officials have already completed around 90 percent of the land acquisition required for the construction work.
Recognising its importance to the country’s transport infrastructure, the Cabinet has now approved a proposal by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to recommence the project.
With the resumption of construction, commuters and businesses are expected to benefit from a more efficient and reliable road network in the coming years.
