The Supreme Court today scheduled March 9 for the hearing of appeal applications filed by former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and former Lanka Sathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando, challenging their convictions in the high-profile carrom board case.
The appeals were taken up before a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Achala Wengappuli. Arguments in the case are set to be presented on the fixed date.
On May 29, 2025, the Colombo High Court Permanent Trial-at-Bar sentenced Aluthgamage to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and Fernando to 25 years, after finding them guilty of causing a financial loss exceeding Rs. 53 million to the government.
