The Deputy Director General of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Darshana Samaraweera, has been placed on compulsory leave in connection with the controversy surrounding the Grade 6 module.
In addition, two other NIE officials have been suspended in relation to the incident, sources said.
The action follows controversy over a Grade Six English language module distributed to schools, which contained a disputed domain name that allegedly linked to inappropriate online content. The issue sparked public concern after it emerged that students could have been exposed to material considered unsuitable for their age group.
The Ministry of Education ordered an internal investigation into the drafting, approval, printing and distribution of the module, while a separate criminal investigation was launched by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to determine whether legal action could be taken against those responsible.
A Fact-Finding Committee was appointed in consultation with the National Institute of Education (NIE), and several senior officials have since been questioned as part of the investigations.
