Four Buddhist monks, including Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero, along with six other individuals who were arrested for allegedly violating coastal conservation laws by placing a Buddha statue at the Trincomalee Bodhiraja Viharaya, have been further remanded until January 28.

The Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court issued the remand order today after reviewing the case.

According to authorities, the group is accused of installing the Buddha statue on November 16, 2025, within a protected coastal zone without obtaining the necessary legal approvals, in violation of coastal conservation regulations.

A tense situation reportedly developed when officials attempted to remove the statue from the temple premises, prompting heightened security measures in the area.

Investigations into the incident are continuing, while the suspects remain in remand custody until the next court hearing.
