With the Meteorology Department forecasting no significant rainfall until the end of March, authorities have warned that proactive measures will be essential to minimise the impact of prolonged dry conditions on agriculture and water resources.

Deputy Director of the Department, Athula Karunanayake, said current weather analysis indicates that the northeast monsoon, which is now affecting the country, will end by late February. The inter-monsoon period is expected to follow and continue through March and April, bringing generally dry conditions.

He explained that while a short period of increased rainfall is likely from January 23 to 26, it will not be sufficient to alter the overall dry weather trend predicted for the coming months.

During this brief spell, cloudy skies and occasional showers are expected in the Eastern, Uva and North Central Provinces, as well as in the Matale and Hambantota districts. Some areas could receive fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres, he added.

However, Karunanayake stressed that outside this limited period, most parts of the country will experience predominantly sunny and dry weather.

In light of this forecast, he urged relevant institutions, particularly the Departments of Agriculture and Irrigation, to take early steps to protect crops and manage water resources efficiently.

“Timely action is necessary to reduce possible negative effects on farming activities due to the anticipated reduction in rainfall,” he said.

The Deputy Director also noted that prevailing winds from the Indian mainland are likely to bring cooler temperatures in several regions, especially during early mornings.

He cautioned that the cooling of atmospheric moisture could lead to morning fog in certain areas, while frost conditions may occur in the Nuwara Eliya district.

The Meteorological Department has advised the public and relevant agencies to stay informed and follow official weather updates in the weeks ahead.
