A total of 18 infrastructure development projects are being implemented in the Uva Province under the Japanese-assisted Rural Infrastructure Development Project in Emerging Regions (RIDEP).

These projects include 12 road development contracts, two irrigation schemes and four drinking water supply projects, with an overall investment of approximately Rs.3 billion.

As part of the programme, 18 kilometres of roads will be developed in the Ella Divisional Secretariat area of Badulla District to improve transport links and rural accessibility.

Government officials stated that the initiative would bring long-term benefits to rural communities by enhancing road networks, irrigation facilities and access to clean drinking water.

The RIDEP programme is being carried out with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is implemented by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.

Authorities expressed confidence that the accelerated completion of these projects would contribute to improving living standards and economic opportunities for residents of the Uva Province.
