The Western Province (South) District Crime Investigation Division has arrested three women in connection with an online fraud that resulted in losses exceeding Rs. 1 million to victims across several parts of the country.

Police said the suspects allegedly deceived multiple individuals by posting internet advertisements claiming to offer high-quality furniture. Victims were reportedly persuaded to make advance payments, after which the promised goods were never delivered.

The suspects include two sisters from the same family and their sister-in-law, police added.

During the arrest, officers recovered a mobile phone allegedly used to carry out the fraudulent activities, two Visa cards issued by private banks, and Rs. 87,000 in cash believed to be part of the proceeds of the scam.

The investigation is being conducted on the instructions of the Officer-in-Charge of the Western Province (South) District Criminal Investigation Division, Inspector Sumith Jayasinghe.
