A demerit points system for drivers who violate traffic laws is scheduled to be implemented by the end of July this year, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Administration and Road Safety, W. P. J. Senadheera, said.
He made this announcement while addressing a workshop held in the Kegalle area with the participation of police officers.
The new system will be introduced alongside the island-wide rollout of the GovPay digital platform for paying traffic fines, enabling authorities to track repeat offenders more effectively through the demerit points mechanism.
Meanwhile, DIG Senadheera revealed that nearly 300 court cases have already been filed in 2026 against drivers who operated vehicles under the influence of drugs.
He emphasized that strict legal action will continue to be taken to ensure road safety and reduce traffic-related offenses across the country.
