He alleged that the government’s decision to import substandard coal has resulted in annual losses exceeding Rs. 1 billion.
The MP pointed out that the Cabinet, led by the Minister of Energy, is responsible for ensuring that a particular company was granted the opportunity to import the coal in question. He further claimed that there is evidence suggesting the Cabinet had acted in a planned manner to facilitate the importation of this substandard coal by the relevant company.
According to MP Rahman, reports received so far indicate that the calorific value of the imported coal is below 5,900 kilocalories per kilogram, and therefore the coal consignment should have been rejected.
He added that quality tests conducted at the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai have confirmed that the coal does not meet the required standards.
