The Department of Prisons has decided to transfer inmates involved in an incident of unrest at the Boossa High-Security Prison to other correctional facilities.

Prisons Media Spokesperson A. C. Gajanayake said a group of inmates climbed onto the roof of Section D last evening and staged a protest against the prison administration, during which prison property was damaged.

The situation was brought under control following the intervention of prison officers, with the assistance of the police.

Gajanayake said the inmates responsible for the disturbance can no longer be housed at Boossa Prison, and arrangements are being made to relocate them to other prisons. An assessment of the damage caused will be carried out today.

The Department of Prisons has launched a special investigation into the incident.
