The incident occurred on the evening of January 15, when the students had gone to bathe in an Oya in the Welihiriya area of Peradeniya. Initial police investigations revealed that the assault followed an argument between the students and a group of individuals who were consuming alcohol at the location.
As a result of the attack, four students sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.
According to the Police, three suspects were arrested on Thursday in the Kiribathkumbura area, while a fourth suspect surrendered to the Peradeniya Police yesterday.
Police said the suspects, aged 30 and 31, are residents of Asgiriya, Gothatuwa, and Kandy. They were produced before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court and remanded until January 29.
Further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
