Lanka Ride cycling tour continues with second day journey to Anuradhapura

The Lanka Ride national cycling tour, organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, completed its first day’s journey in Kandy and will begin its second day today (17) with a ride from Kandy to Anuradhapura.

The final stage of the tour is scheduled for the 18th, when cyclists will travel from Anuradhapura to Colombo.

A total of 27 teams are participating in this multi-day cycling event. The tour officially commenced yesterday (16) at 9.00 a.m. in front of the Lake House premises in Colombo.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage, Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Thilakaratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Aruna Bandara, Director General of the Department of Sports Development S. Achchuthan, along with several ministry officials. Lake House Chairman Gamini Werushaman and Editorial Director Sisira Yapa were also present at the event.

Following the registration of participants, the race officially began.

At the conclusion of the first stage in Kandy, five prizes were awarded. H.W.M.S. Pintu, competing under race number 193, secured first place by completing the race in 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 41 seconds. A.D.S. Perera (No. 195) finished second. Both cyclists represent the Sri Lanka Army team.

Third place was claimed by Deshan Kavinda of the Ja-Ela Flash team (No. 82). Suranga Ranawira (No. 142) finished fourth, while Sithum Poorna (No. 33) secured fifth place.

Today’s stage of the race is scheduled to begin at 9.00 a.m. from in front of the Gannoruwa Agricultural Research Centre.
