More than 94,000 tourists arrived in Sri Lanka during the first week of January 2026 alone, indicating a strong start to the year for the country’s tourism industry, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam said.

Addressing the media, Hewawasam stated that the SLTDA has launched a special programme aimed at achieving the country’s tourism targets for this year.

He said a series of promotional campaigns are currently being carried out targeting European markets in a bid to attract more visitors, particularly during off-peak seasons.

According to Hewawasam, special attention will be given to Spain and surrounding regions, as tourists from these markets mainly visit Sri Lanka during the summer months. He noted that promotional activities in these countries are expected to be further intensified in the coming months.

“As part of this initiative, a tourism promotion programme was first implemented in India. Promotional activities have already been carried out in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai,” he said.

Hewawasam added that the objective of the India-focused campaign was to diversify tourist arrivals from India and attract higher-spending visitors to Sri Lanka.
